Our school year is broken up into four terms...

This year it goes something like this:

Term One - Feb to March (8 weeks)
2 weeks holiday
Term Two - April to June (11 weeks)
2 weeks holiday
Term Three - July to September (10 weeks)
2 weeks holiday
Term Four - October to December (11 weeks)
6 weeks holiday

All students have four terms of P.E. (Physical Education) two terms of Art, two terms of Indonesian, two terms of ICT and two terms of Music.

We have a library but Miss McGeady takes us there. Mrs Kilfoyle works in the library but she is not a teacher.

New Project: Tell Us About Your School!

In this project, we will publish a photo of different areas of our school and explain what happens there.

As Mrs Yollis' class has holidays from 24th-31st May and they finish the school year on June 15th, our project will run from 1st to 15th June.

This will be a fantastic project to finish off the school year for Mrs Yollis' class and celebrate our wonderful friendship. A lot will be learnt about how school is the same and different in opposite hemispheres.

2KM and Mrs Yollis' class have learnt so much from our lunch project!

It has been a lot of fun to collaborate to find out about healthy eating and how different cultures live.

The school year will end for Mrs Yollis' class on June 15th. We have time for one more project before then.

Mrs Yollis and Miss McGeady have come up with a few project ideas and are asking all the students to vote on their preferred idea.

Here are the ideas...

• Our country – students publish a post about one fact about their country (it could be about a landmark or monument, who the leader is, something about the language or culture, etc).

• Our school – students take a photo of something around the school (eg the art room, the playground, the library) and talk about what happens there.

• Our environment – students publish one tip about looking after the environment – it could be anything from turning the lights off to recycling water.

• My favourite activity/game – students talk or write about one of their favourite pastimes, hobbies or toys.

• My favourite website – students talk or write about their favourite website. Why do you like it? What can you do on this website?

At Leopold Primary School we have a wonderful healthy canteen. To get a lunch order or a snack order, you have to write your order on a paper bag and the lunch order monitors take it to the canteen in the morning. The monitors then pick up the orders at lunch time.

Someone thought it was a potato.

Another thought it was mushroom.

Maybe it is a squash?

the crisp, white-fleshed, edible tuber of a Central American climbing plant of the pea family (Pachyrhizus erosus, family Leguminosae), cultivated since pre-Columbian times and used esp. in Mexican cooking.

Who wants more?

Mrs. Yollis had to cut the remaining sticks into fractions.

Here are some thoughts from the tasters:

It's crunchy and reminded me of salad.

I like the taste of jicama because my mom gave it to me once before and I love it!

I loved it! Where did you get it?

It tastes like lettuce.

It was surprisingly juicy!

It's not my cup of tea.
(And that's okay. Everyone has different taste buds.)

I liked it a lot and it reminded me of when I've tried it with Mexican food.

It taste like carrots.

It so good, I need to hang out with it more often!

It's the best vegetable in the world!

I thought it tasted like a mixture of lettuce, pear, and apple!

I like the first taste, but not the aftertaste.

Surprisingly, it taste like an Indian vegetable that looks a lot like jicama.

It's amazing! More please!

It really is my cup of tea.

Jicama is really juicy and sweet!

To me, it taste like a fruit because it's so juicy and sweet.

It's so good, I'm definitely going to get it at the store!

Jicama is available in the produce section of a supermarket!

Australia: Sophie's Vegie Garden

Yesterday Ashleigh and Zoe from 2KM went to Sophie's house after school to help her make a vegie garden in her backyard.

Sophie's dad Mark is a landscaper so he knew exactly what to do.

Mark made a box out of wood for the vegie patch. They had to dig up some dirt to put in the box and then add some horse poo. Next they planted their vegies. They planted carrots, broccoli, lettuce and honey snap peas. The last thing they had to do was water their new vegies.

Hopefully the vegies will grow soon so Sophie and her family can enjoy some delicious produce!

Australians Try Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches!

Last week, Clancy did a post about his lunch which included a peanut butter sandwich. Trent's mum, Mrs Adler, told us that peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are popular in America. Some people call them PB&Js! No one in 2KM had tried this combination before and although it sounded "interesting", we decided to give it a try! It is good to try new foods!

In Australia we call jelly, jam. Jelly is a dessert that Americans call jello. It gets confusing doesn't it!

First we had to find out exactly how to make a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This video explained it all.

Australia's Growing Gardens

Last week 2KM loved reading about Americans who grow their own fruit and veggies!

Here are some students from 2KM who are growing fruit or vegetables at home.

TOM

Tom and his family grow zucchinis, capsicums, squash and tomatoes.

They also have some chickens which lay eggs. Tom likes eating boiled eggs. Eggs are a healthy source of protein!

This is a letter from Bianca to Miss McGeady...

"Dear Miss McGeady, This is a picture of our tree. It is ten years old. It's a blood plum and white peach tree fruit tree. To grow a tree like this you need a blood plum seed and white peach seed and graft them together. Then you have your fruit and this is what it looks like and it tastes yummy!"

Miss McGeady tried one of these fruits and she agreed. It was delicious!

Edible Birthday Bouquet!

Students in America are allowed to bring a healthy treat to school to share on their birthdays.

On Tuesday, Jaxon brought in a fabulous fruit spray to celebrate her birthday! What a beautiful snack!

Strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, pineapple, and grapes were used to create a bouquet!

Everyone pulled out a fruit stick!

There was plenty of fruit for snacking all day!

Thank you, Jaxon, for the beautifully delicious snack!

Do Americans eat beetroot?

Miss McGeady commented on Ben's salad lunch post and told Ben that she likes to eat beetroot in her salad. Ben replied and said "I was wondering what is a beetroot? Is is like a red beet that we have in America?"

This is the beetroot that many Australian's love to eat...

It comes in a can and is very tasty in sandwiches, salads and hamburgers.

Beetroot is a root vegetable that is low in fat and high in fibre.

You can also eat raw beetroot (which is probably better for you) however canned beetroot is most popular in Australia for it's sweet taste.

Growing Gardens!

Miss McGeady asked if anyone in Mrs. Yollis' class grows their own vegetables or fruit.

I sent an email out to parents, and it turns out that Trent, Caleb, and our friend, Mrs. Ranney, all enjoy growing their own food to eat!

Trent's garden

In the lower front portion on the

left is squash, in the middle back is lettuce, in front of that is a patch
of carrots. The right lower portion has five different types of tomatoes.

Our most prized portion though is the upper tier. It is filled with our
artichokes. You can see that they grow in big bushes and the chokes growout of them. We like to steam them and eat the leaves, but the best part is the heart. Our dog, Dodger, even likes to the eat the leaves too.

We have had up to 45 artichokes growing at the same time!

If you leave them too long, they go to flower. The flower is so beautiful
though that we let a few go every season just to see the gorgeous purple
plant!

Mrs. Ranney's garden!

Here is Mrs. Ranney's garden from last year. She grew eggplant, tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupe, broccoli, lettuce, Swiss chard, zucchini and yellow squash, onions, radishes, carrots, nasturtiums (edible), and some other flowers to help ward off pests.

Caleb and his family grow lettuce, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, onions, carrots, artichokes, beans, lemons, oranges, limes, and a ton of different herbs.

Americans Learn About Weetabix

Our Australian friends talked about a food called Weetabix when we Skyped them last week.

Only Kate had heard of Weetabix and that's probably because her father is from Australia.

Today, Kate brought in a box of Weetabix to share!

Mrs. Yollis broke a few biscuits apart for people to a sample.

American Lunchtime!

2KM was wondering about our lunch area and the hot lunch items.

For the first 20 minutes of lunch, the older students play while the younger students have lunch.

Then they switch.

First, students choose milk or chocolate milk.

Which seems the healthier choice?

Today's hot lunch was pizza and an apple.

Each pizza slice is individually wrapped.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, some students purchase a salad.

Everyone sits under the awning and eats.

Some students eat AND devour Greek history!

Students can purchase apple juice, orange juice, or bottled water.

What is a Tangerine?

Many students from 2KM were unfamiliar with the word tangerine after seeing Kayla's brainfood.

Here is some information about this popular fruit!

The orange tangerine is a citrus in the family of mandarin fruit. A tangerine is basically an orange, but the tangerine is smaller, flatter, and it is easier to peel. This sweet fruit is harvested in Arizona, California, Florida, Brazil, China, Italy, Japan, Spain, and does not grow in Australia.

2KM's Lunchtime

Everyday at 1:30pm the students in 2KM eat their lunch inside our classroom.
We sit in a circle like this to eat our lunch...

Most people bring lunches from home in their lunchboxes. There are usually one or two students each day who buy their lunch from the school canteen. You have to order your lunch in the morning by writing your order on a paper bag. At 1:30 monitors from each grade walk over to the canteen to collect the lunch orders.

Here is our school canteen.

In our state there is a rule that school canteens cannot sell lollies, chocolate, soft drinks and other junk food any more. The state government is trying to get people to make healthy choices.

Popular foods at the canteen are salad rolls, homemade pizza, nachos, homemade meat pies and sausage rolls.

At 1:40pm we go outside to play. Our school is very big but the most popular places for students in Grades One and Two to play are this playground and oval. We like to play footy (AFL) and cricket on the oval. The grass is a bit dry because Australia is in a drought (that means there is not enough rain).

When does Mrs Yollis' Class start and end the school day and when do they eat?

We thought we would tell you about our school day!

8:15 A.M. - school starts
10:00-10:20 A.M. - recess/snack time or as it is now called... brainfood!
12:15-1:00 P.M. we play and eat

The first 20 minutes are for play while the younger students (first/second grades) get in line to buy a hot lunch or eat the lunch that they brought from home.

The last 20 minutes are for older students (third/fourth/fifth grades) to get in line to buy a hot lunch or eat the lunch that they brought from home.

Brainfood is a small fruit or vegetable morning snack that allows us to refuel our brains and bodies so we can do our best work. Some popular brainfood snacks in Mrs. Yollis' class are:

tangerines

carrots

orange slices

fruit salad

yellow bell peppers (pretty!)

juicy strawberries

cucumbers and oranges

fruity yogurt

The students in 2KM were wondering...

When does Mrs Yollis' Class start and end the school day and when do they eat?

We thought we would tell you about 2KM's school day!

9am - school starts
10am - time for brainfood
11:00-11:30am - recess time (we eat our snack outside)
1:30pm - we eat our lunch in our classroom
1:40pm-2:30pm - we play outside (and finish our lunch if we need to)
3:30pm - home time!
