America: Mr. Yollis Buys a Jicama!

What is this?

Someone thought it was a potato.

Another thought it was mushroom.

Maybe it is a squash?

What is it?

jicama [hee - kuh - muh, or hik - uh- muh]
noun
the crisp, white-fleshed, edible tuber of a Central American climbing plant of the pea family (Pachyrhizus erosus, family Leguminosae), cultivated since pre-Columbian times and used esp. in Mexican cooking.

Everyone took a sample.

Who wants more?

Mrs. Yollis had to cut the remaining sticks into fractions.

Here are some thoughts from the tasters:

It's crunchy and reminded me of salad.

I like the taste of jicama because my mom gave it to me once before and I love it!

I loved it! Where did you get it?

It tastes like lettuce.

It was surprisingly juicy!

It's not my cup of tea.
(And that's okay. Everyone has different taste buds.)

I liked it a lot and it reminded me of when I've tried it with Mexican food.

It taste like carrots.

It so good, I need to hang out with it more often!

It's the best vegetable in the world!

I thought it tasted like a mixture of lettuce, pear, and apple!

I like the first taste, but not the aftertaste.

Surprisingly, it taste like an Indian vegetable that looks a lot like jicama.

It's amazing! More please!

It really is my cup of tea.

Jicama is really juicy and sweet!

To me, it taste like a fruit because it's so juicy and sweet.

It's so good, I'm definitely going to get it at the store!

Jicama is available in the produce section of a supermarket!

Thank you, Mr. Yollis, for introducing us to a new, healthy snack!

Have you ever eaten jicama?

Do you like to try new foods?

  2. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

I have never heard of jicama! I am sure we don't have them in Australia. Thank you for introducing me to a new food and with all your great descriptions I felt like I could almost taste the jicama!

When I first saw it I thought it looked like a potato, like some of the students. It was interesting to see that you can eat jicama raw. I wonder if you eat it cooked as well?

I am so proud of everyone who had a try of the jicama. It is great to try new things because you never know, you might just like them!

    From your friend,
    Miss McGeady

We think jicama is very scrumptious! We still can't get enough of it! Kayla even had it for snack today.

    Jicama is our favorite vegetable.

    What is your favorite vegetable?

    Yours truly,
    Kayla and Trent:D
